How the book works
Fundamentals
The first few pages of the book include written and video information to help guide the student to establish the essential fundamentals of flute playing, to set them up for a lifetime of healthy flute playing.
New notes
Each new note is introduced in a new colour to help with note reading skills.
Duets
After every second lesson there are two pages of duets. These duets can be used for sight-reading practise or as revision material. It’s also an excellent way to train students to play independently while a different part is being played.
Marking
Each lesson has a criteria page for marking each individual exercise and piece. This is designed to serve as a personal record of the student’s progress and not as a comparison to the other students. Once a student has completed each lesson, (generally each lesson can be completed in a week if regular practise is completed) the student receives a coloured loom band or piece of thread in the same colour as the lesson name. This is an important part of the program and gives the student a feeling of accomplishment and completion. The coloured band can be attained even if the student only receives C’s for the lesson. This allows the student to remain engaged and interested, and for them to keep up with others, (if they are learning in a group). They are encouraged, however, to go back and revise any songs with a B or C grading in order to improve their mark, whilst progressing to the next lesson.
Practising
The criteria page also has a place for the student to record their weekly practise, with a sticker earned for doing 5 or more practises of 10-15 minutes per day. This can be broken up into 5-minute slots if time is an issue, or the student is getting dizzy from hyperventilating. There is also a space for the teacher to write specific comments for each student, to remind them what they need to focus on during the week.

About Joanna
Joanna Sullivan is a flute performance graduate of the Victorian College of Arts. She also has a Master of Music Education from the University of Queensland. Joanna has taught flute at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and many prestigious private schools in Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. She continues to perform, both as a soloist and as a member of many different ensembles, as she believes her performance skills inform her teaching.

As a studio flute teacher with over 40 years experience, Joanna passionately strives to understand and develop what she teaches and how she teaches. This led her to develop the Fab Flute Player in the hope that it would enhance the learning capabilities and progress of all flute students, for a lifetime of healthy playing.
